Rejected petitions, 1891-1895.

These files document Governor John Young Brown's use of the governor's power to deny pardons to convicts, and to reject petitions to postpone and remit fines. Each petition is accompanied by an envelope which lists the petitioner's name, county and offense, and frequently the date of executive action. The 1891 constitution required the governor to explain his decision in each case; this is often noted on the envelope as well. Attached to some petitions are copies of indictments, other court records, and related correspondence.
